Everyone knows for a fact that sleeping is a necessary daily routine. But not everyone knows why. It therefore does not come as a surprise that people make mistakes when buying mattresses and furniture for kids. They simply pick what looks appealing to the eyes. Comfort often comes along as the last consideration. It even gets ignored sometimes.
The truth is, adequate sleep is not enough. It also has to be comfortable. That is why you have to be cautious when buying mattresses and beds for your children. As such, be patient the next time you buy your kid that water, spring of foam mattress. Ask yourself how comfortable the mattress you want to buy your kid is. Do the same when buying bunk and sofa beds for your children. So, why exactly is adequate and comfortable sleep necessary for your child? Read on to find out.
Rest
This one is pretty much obvious. Kids cannot do without enough rest after a playful day at school. Sleep as you will find out, is more or less like spa vacation for the body. Less sleep means your child’s body will not have the downtime it needs to keep him or her active for activities of the next day.
Brain de-cluttering
Researchers have never figured out what exactly happens in your brain while you are asleep. Of course that means they haven’t figured out what happens in children’s’ brains as well when they are fast asleep. They have however found out that storing, filing away information, clearing memories and experiences are some of the main functions of the brain during sleep. You can therefore imagine what will happen to your kid every time he or she lacks enough sleep. His or her brain will simply be a clutter, disorganized mess.
Emotion regulation
If you have ever spent an afternoon or evening with a tired toddler, then you know that the most pleasant child can easily become as prickly as a cactus tree because of inadequate sleep. In short, inadequate sleep can make it hard for a kid to manage emotions. Common, everyday activities can turn out to be cranky. In other words, your child can easily become irritable, cranky and too grumpy to have around.
Growth
You may not know it but there is a direct link between adequate sleep and consistent release of growth hormones. It does not end there. There is a direct link between healthy growth and enough sleep. That is why enough sleep is always recommended as part of therapy for children with stunted growth. Sleep simply ensures that the body gets to release the right growth hormones at the right time without distractions.
Resistance
This is where the immune system comes into the picture. Children have weaker immune systems compared to adults. You can therefore imagine what can happen to their already weak immune systems when they get inadequate sleeping hours for long. A research conducted in Brazil revealed that inadequate sleeping hours can affect a child’s ability to respond. The research also found out a direct link between abnormally weak immune systems in children who hardly have enough sleeping hours. The research found out that the white blood cells drop by as much as 20% each time a kid is deprived enough sleep. It therefore becomes easy for such children to succumb to short term illnesses during the cold and flu season.
Mental health
Again, research studies come handy here. Research studies in different parts of the world have indicated several times that there is a link between persistent sleep anomalies in childhood and mental conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression and drug abuse later in life. The best you can do to keep such mental nightmares is to ensure you kid gets enough sleep daily.
Health and wellness
Your child’s pediatrician will tell you for a fact that weight issues are related to inadequate sleep. It does not end there. Inadequate sleep in children is a major factor in cardiovascular conditions as well as diabetes.
Energy
Sleep and energy depend on each other. Inadequate sleep translates to low energy levels during the day. It therefore becomes a problem for any kid to stay energized for sporting activities and other functions at home or school that call for sustainable supply of energy. Keep in mind too that enough sleep can go a long way to increase your kid’s alertness in class. That of course, translates to good performance.
What you should know
Be careful anytime you shop for your kid’s furniture and mattresses. Ensure they will not in any way hamper the right sleeping posture. Be sure to find out from your kid’s pediatrician what a nice sleeping posture for children can entail. Then remember that some mattress and bedding for children contain harmful chemical elements. Do not, for instance, reuse old children mattresses manufactured in the 60S. They contain traces of asbestos, which needless to say, has been proven to cause cancer.
