Platform Beds - Do You Need Them?

Do you need a new bed? If your current bed is already squeaking or it is so old that you are worried about its structure, you should really consider getting a new one. Is there a difference?

•    Structure - The main difference between a platform bed and a regular bed is the way the mattress is supported. A regular bed is supported by a special frame that has several rows of big springs. On the other hand, a platform bed supports the mattress with … well, a flat piece of hardwood.

•    Height - An obvious difference between the two elements examined is their height. The box springs take a lot of space and that is why regular bed frames tend to be higher. However, platform beds do not have box springs, thus, they can be signed to be just a few inches away from the ground.

•    Comfort - When it comes to comfort, most people do not actually find a big difference between a regular bed and a platform bed. How comfortable a bed will be would depend mostly on the type of mattress used. So if you want to sleep well, you have to get a high quality mattress.

What is the origin of platform beds?

There are a lot of people who attribute platform beds to the ones that the ancient Egyptians used. There are also those who believe that it originated from China. Whichever the case is, platform beds started to become very popular in the 1930’s in Europe. Eventually there rose a number of varieties in the market. When a platform bed is referred to as ‘Asian,’ it usually features more elaborate and oriental designs than most platform beds that one can see these days. ‘Modern’ platform beds do not vary that much from the ‘Asian’ varieties but their styles are more geometric and sometimes feature ‘European’ flavors. There are also futuristic platform beds that feature more than just the traditional ‘bed look.’ These are uniquely designed and are the ones usually crafted by brilliant interior designers.

Why do you want a platform bed?

•    It does not consume a lot of space - One of the best things about a platform bed is that it does not consume a lot of space. In fact, most designs are only appropriate for one user although there are platform beds that can accommodate two. If you have a small room, it is practical to consider this option.

•    It is less expensive - Platform beds are also less expensive than your regular beds. Who do not want to save costs when shopping for furniture? Platform beds are usually very affordable because they are built of light, yet very durable materials.
